An important part of the work of MDS is helping families find ways to connect with one another. Attending meetings of the Family Council of the Monadnock Region is a good way to start. The Family Council is made up of families who have children/family members receiving services through MDS.

The Council enhances, expands and supports the role that families play in making decisions about the design and implementation of MDS services and supports. They provide a forum for families to make their concerns, needs and preferences known to their area agency and to its policy makers.

There are support groups for young adults with disabilities, siblings, parents, people with acquired brain injuries, autism spectrum disorders and for families. Contact your Service Coordinator to find out how to access these and other useful groups. You can also check the MDS Calendar to see what’s coming up.

From time to time MDS offers workshops and training sessions, some of which are specifically designed for families. Check the MDS Calendar for schedules and information on upcoming workshops.

As of summer 2015, NH Family Ties has a new website that provides a channel of support for parents of children who have special needs. Based on the vision that when parents are informed, connected and supported by other families who have been there, they are better able to define their needs and the needs of their children, this website will help keep parents connected.
